Why Ceramic Tile?

Glazed ceramic and porcelain tile are natural products manufactured for beauty and durability and are available in thousands of colors, sizes, finishes and textures.

Consider using large sizes in all areas you wish to tile. It is a misconception to think that you must buy a small tile for a small room. Larger tile will make your room more elegant and give a more open, less busy effect.

Choose the right tile for each area of your home. A high traffic area in the home requires tile suited to the wear it will receive. Never use a wall tile on the floor. It will show wear very quickly.

Glazed ceramic and porcelain tile are functional and versatile. Select your tile before your wallpapers and fabrics, since your tile will be there much longer.

Tile is usually purchased by the square foot, not by the piece. This allows you to compare prices between tile of different sizes. It is easy to obtain a rough idea of how much tile you will need. Calculate the square footage of your room by multiplying the length by the width. Then subtract the square footage of areas not to be tiled (such as under installed cabinets). Multiply your final total by the price of the tile you have selected and the result is an estimate of how much it will cost to purchase the tile.

The cost of installation can run as much or more than the cost of the tile itself. Even if your first choice in design and color is a bit more expensive, the amount you save by choosing a less expensive tile is often minimal.

Variations in shade are inherent in glazed ceramic and porcelain tile. Always buy enough the first time around to take care of cuts and waste during installation and to reserve for future spot replacements should you need them.

Many people ask if they should install their tile before or after their cabinets. In most cases, either is correct although tiling underneath does give a more finished look. It is usually a question of personal preference, but if you are planning to replace your cabinets in the future, you may want to tile underneath now to avoid patching later, if your new cabinets are not the same size and shape.

New concrete slabs run a high risk of developing "settling cracks." There are materials on the market today to help minimize the problem of these cracks extending to your ceramic tile installation. Ask about these products.

Finally, one last point to remember about glazed ceramic and porcelain tile is how economical it really is when compared to other floor covering materials over the life of a project.
